Gas Leaks Are a Serious Safety Hazard

A gas leak — whether from a deteriorated hose, a loose fitting, or a cracked pipe joint — poses an immediate risk of fire, explosion, and carbon monoxide poisoning. In Malaysia's tropical climate, rubber hoses and seals degrade faster due to heat and humidity, making regular checks and prompt repairs essential. Even a small leak that seems insignificant can accumulate in enclosed spaces and reach dangerous concentrations within hours.

FlameGuard Technical Services provides rapid-response leak detection and repair for both emergency situations and planned assessments. Our technicians are trained to locate, isolate, and resolve gas leaks efficiently while following all safety protocols mandated by the Energy Commission of Malaysia.

How We Detect Gas Leaks

Our detection process combines multiple methods to ensure no leak goes unidentified, regardless of its size or location. We use a layered approach that includes:

  • Electronic gas detectors — handheld instruments capable of detecting gas concentrations as low as a few parts per million, allowing us to pinpoint leaks that are invisible to the human senses.
  • Pressure-drop testing — isolating sections of your gas piping and monitoring for pressure decay over a set period. Even micro-leaks that electronic sensors may struggle to localise produce a measurable pressure drop in a controlled test.
  • Soap-bubble solution testing — a proven field method for visually confirming leak locations at joints, valves, and threaded connections once the general area has been identified.
  • Combustible gas imaging — for larger commercial and industrial systems, we deploy advanced optical gas imaging technology that can visualise gas plumes in real time, making it possible to survey extensive pipe runs quickly.

Our Repair Procedures

Once a leak is located and confirmed, our technician will explain the cause and recommended repair before any work begins. Common repair actions include:

  • Replacing deteriorated rubber or braided stainless steel gas hoses
  • Re-sealing threaded pipe joints with appropriate gas-rated thread sealant
  • Replacing corroded or damaged pipe fittings and connectors
  • Tightening or replacing compression fittings on copper or corrugated stainless steel tubing
  • Replacing faulty gas valves, regulators, or shut-off cocks
  • Re-routing short sections of piping where damage is structural or where the original installation was non-compliant

All replacement parts are sourced from reputable suppliers and meet Malaysian Standards (MS) requirements. After every repair, we conduct a post-repair pressure test and a final leak check to confirm the system is fully sealed before restoring gas supply.

Emergency Response

If you smell gas or suspect a leak, take the following steps immediately: turn off the gas supply at the main valve or cylinder if it is safe to do so, open windows and doors to ventilate the area, do not operate any electrical switches or create sparks, evacuate all occupants, and call FlameGuard at 013-7745 208.

For emergency calls within our primary service areas of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, we aim to dispatch a technician within one hour. Our vehicles are stocked with the most commonly needed parts and fittings, so the majority of residential and light commercial leak repairs can be completed in a single visit.

Preventive Leak Assessments

Not all leak detection work is reactive. Many of our commercial clients schedule periodic leak assessments as part of their safety management plans. A planned leak survey is significantly less disruptive and less costly than an emergency call-out, and it demonstrates regulatory compliance to auditors and insurers.

We recommend a professional leak assessment at least once a year for residential properties and every six months for commercial kitchens, industrial facilities, and any premises using high-pressure gas systems. Properties with ageing pipework — particularly galvanised iron systems installed more than 15 years ago — should be assessed more frequently.

What Sets FlameGuard Apart
